Gigaton CO₂: About Us
Our Mission
At Gigaton CO₂, we are on a mission to capture gigatons of CO₂ from the atmosphere and fossil fuel sources and transform it into sustainable solutions that power a net zero future. Founded on 25 years of environmental technology expertise, we are pioneering carbon capture and utilization to tackle climate change at scale by delivering practical, real world solutions.
Our Technologies
Extracts CO2 from seawater, reducing atmospheric CO2 and ocean acidification.
ON HOLD due to limited market appetite.
Removes up to 95% of CO₂ from ships and industry using compact, low-energy solvent systems.
At Scale Prototype build phase.
An innovative and scalable way to store clean energy using captured CO₂, aiming for high efficiency and long-duration storage.
ON HOLD due to limited market appetite.
Our team combines decades of expertise in environmental technology, engineering, and commercialization. Based in Scotland, we're driving innovation in carbon capture with a history of delivering solutions that make a global impact. We're committed to advancing sustainable technologies while creating economic opportunities through Scottish manufacturing, local supply chains, and high-skilled jobs across the UK.
Gigaton CO2’s technologies support policies like the UK's Industrial Decarbonization Strategy and Maritime 2050 vision, targeting markets worth £10 – 30B by 2030 across maritime, offshore, and industrial sectors. By developing scalable CO₂ removal and utilization solutions, we’re working towards gigaton-scale impact and helping pave the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Why We Started Gigaton
Gigaton CO₂ was founded by a small team with over 25 years of experience in developing and commercializing environmental technologies. In past ventures, we created globally adopted innovations (like environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids), successfully scaled them, and exited several times through acquisition. However, the urgency of the climate crisis made it clear to us that we need to go further.
We created Gigaton to develop carbon capture solutions that aren't just scientifically sound but also commercially and operationally viable. Our mission is grounded in frustration with the limitations of existing systems and driven by the belief that carbon capture must work in the real world: on ships, offshore platforms, and at small industrial sites that can't accommodate massive infrastructure.
We’re self-funded to date, with over £750,000 invested into developing and validating the technology through early lab and prototype stages. We’re now scaling to field trials and preparing for commercial deployment.
Our goal is simple: deliver scalable, low energy carbon capture systems that support a global net zero transition, starting with the sectors that need it most and have the fewest options today.
